Bernadette Smith is an artist and photographer now based in Sydney. She has an extensive international exhibition record with work included in collections in Germany, France, Britain, Australia and the USA. Solo exhibitions include the Fotogalerie Friedrichshain in Berlin, Newcastle Region Gallery, Seniwati Gallery, Indonesia and Kodak Gallery of Sydney. "My current art research began with imaging water sustainability but my art took a phenomenological turn when I noticed how slanted sunlight interacted with the vintage textured glass of my studio window pane. What habitually had been an ordered view through an open window instead became a transformative lens through which to contemplate the diffracted landscape beyond." email bernadettesmithart@yahoo.com.au

Nurture group show at Verge Gallery

Threshold 890 x 610mm digital photograph printed on Ilford Pearl

Rapture  890 x 610mm digital photograph printed on Ilford Pearl paper

Nurture part of Curatorial Lab from October 17 - 29th 2019 was a group exhibition at Verge Gallery with Danika Knežević, Jacqueline Larcombe, Rosie Thomas, Simon Cooper, Sabella D’Souza, Simon Baré, Tamara Voninski, Bernadette Smith and Suzy Faiz. My work in the show emphasises the need for a greater awareness of the non-human world by exploring the possibility of identification as an engaged subject. Using a macro lens I have photographed sunlight rays scattering within my studio window pane in the former Callan Park asylum. In this liminal zone of uncertainty, fleeting microcosmic diffractions within the heritage glass were recorded as light transformed itself in a process of disintegration and re-emergence. These light phenomena prompt us to consider a less anthropocentric view of the universe and a nurturing emphasis on the non-human to counteract the spectre of human induced climate crisis. More glass refraction photos here
